What you need to know to enroll in a prescription drug plan (PDP)

When can you enroll in a prescription drug plan?

As long as you enroll in both Medicare Part A and Part B, you can also enroll in a prescription drug plan during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). You can join later, but you may have to pay a penalty, unless you qualify for an exception.

How do you sign up for Medicare Part D?

Each private insurance company that offers a drug plan handles the enrollment in its plan. To join, contact the company and ask how to become a member. You can also join online at the Medicare website.

Can Medicare Part D refuse to cover you or delay your coverage?

If you are entitled to Part A or enrolled in Part B, you cannot be refused enrollment in a prescription drug plan. You can join only one plan at a time, either a standalone drug plan or a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan that includes drug coverage.

Can you change plans later?

You can change your Medicare Part D plan each year during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15 to December 7. Coverage becomes effective starting January 1 of the following year. If you qualify for an exception, you may also be able to make changes during a Special Enrollment Period.

How does renewal work?

Your Medicare Part D coverage renews automatically from year to year, unless you choose to change plans during the AEP.
