Ways to Enroll in Medicare

You have options for how you enroll.

Medicare.gov is a good place to start when you’re enrolling for the first time or changing your coverage. You can research plans and apply online, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

When first enrolling, you can also apply by phone or in person at any Social Security office. Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, to make an appointment. If you live outside the United States and its territories, contact the nearest U.S. Social Security office, U.S. Embassy or consulate, or the Veterans Affairs Regional Office (VARO) in the Philippines.

Once you’re enrolled in Medicare, you can apply for a Medicare Advantage plan, prescription drug plan or Medicare supplement insurance plan at Medicare.gov or directly with most insurance companies. You can apply online, by phone or through a local insurance agent. Many agents hold events at community locations where you can go and get your questions answered first-hand and in person. Watch for announcements in the mail, at your pharmacy or anywhere else that community events might be held in your neighborhood.
